The printed version of the magazine was very well-liked. We liked it, too. But in recent years, online advertising has become much more profitable compared to print advertising, the costs related to printing and mailing an issue continue to increase, and at the end of 2022, a large number of our advertisers switched away from print advertising, leaving us without the funds to continue publishing a paper copy.

That does not mean that the reason for publishing Townsend Letter have disappeared – The magazine stood for health, for sharing knowledge, for personal rights, for truth in medicine, for decades, and what we do is still important. When we lost our main source of funding, we switched to the online format instead. Townsend e-Letter readers agree that they want the information, even if they can’t hold a magazine, and keep a collection on their shelves for years (you know who you are – thank you, dear and dedicated readers)…

Just like the advertisers, our budget was reduced when we stopped paying to print a magazine, but we still have expenses, and could use your help. We are dedicated to continuing to provide our readers with the same valuable information that people have come to trust in the 40+ years since the first Townsend Letter was typed up and mailed out, and that takes writers, and editors, and support staff. Internet-related items, such as a website, building/sending the e-Letter each week, it all adds up.

Have you ever noticed how many pharmaceutical ads there are? In magazines, on tv, or the radio, or internet? That’s where the advertising dollars are, and as you can probably guess, big pharma is not lining up to help keep the type of information we provide our readers available – Berberine for blood sugar issues? – Curcumin for inflammation? – Red Yeast Rice, or garlic, for cholesterol? – nutrition, hydration, supplementation when needed, and a whole-body approach, as opposed to just taking a prescription drug? – pharmaceutical companies do not want us learning and knowing these things, and we need to keep working together to make sure that we have access to information and treatment options that include natural and ‘alternative’ options.

Nutrition. Acupuncture. Chiropractic. Homeopathy. Emotional Health. Energy Work. Good Sleep. Exercise. Repurposed Drugs. There are so many ways to help ourselves, and our loved ones, but without this kind of information, we are limited to what our doctor(s) tell us, and they often don’t know about alternatives, or they’ve been taught that it’s ‘quack’ medicine – are you aware that pharmaceutical companies help pay for medical education courses to help keep doctors educated once they graduate? Do you know that doctors are allowed to receive cash and gifts from pharmaceutical companies, and that these ‘payments’ are frequently linked to higher numbers of prescriptions being written for that drug? Some doctors probably see through the con, some doctors may think they really are looking out for the patient, and may be, and for some doctors, these payments for prescribing certain drugs can add up to more income than the salary from their ‘regular’ job.

As you can imagine, we are still kind of wobbly from having to switch so much of what we do so suddenly, and we could use your help – anything will make a difference – pay what you can afford. It’s true that there is no difference at this time between paid and unpaid readers, but we are keeping track, and will factor it into future offers and bonuses once we are stable again – until then, your reward will be the continued publication of all the valuable information in the Townsend e-Letter, and the knowledge that you’ve helped to ensure that real health information will remain available as the battle for our own health choices continues.
